

John Nelson, 90, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Carpenter House Hospice. He was born July 29, 1922, in Cherry Tree, PA. John was a World War II veteran where he served in the Army Air Force's Combat Cargo Division as a radio operator in the Pacific. Preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ada Nelson and his seven siblings. Survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Sivits Nelson; daughter and son-in-law, Tara Lynn and Howard Prejean of Baton Rouge; and grandson Jonathan Charles "Johnny" Nelson of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Kelly Olinde and husband Tommy Olinde of Central and their children Brittany, Brooke, Breanna and Bralynn Olinde; Lynette Zumo and husband Shannon Zumo of Monroe and their children Stacey and Mathew Zumo and Kerry Prejean and his wife Debbie Prejean of St. Amant and their children Candice and Adam Prejean, Joshua Prejean and wife Ashley and daughter Londyn. John graduated from University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduating from college, John moved to Pensacola, Florida where he was employed by W.R. Grace/Allied Chemical. He transferred to Baton Rouge in 1957. After retiring from Allied Chemical, John was employed by Hullinghorst Industries and Anco Insulation. He was an active member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church since 1957 and the Faith Sunday school class. John's favorite pastime was golfing. He was an avid golfer and even made a "hole-in-one" at Baton Rouge's City Park. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Sunday, 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Visitation resumes Monday from 9:00am until the religious service at 11:00am in the chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ken Carroll. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Broadmoor United Methodist Church, Carpenter House Hospice, or Alzheimer's Services of the Capital Area.
