2023 after a brief illness. John was born August 10, 1948, in New Orleans and was a native of
Slidell. John is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Sara Ashton Murphy; two brothers, William Murphy (Tammy) and Timothy Murphy (Terri Beth). He was predeceased by his parents, William A. P. Murphy and Dorothy Rita Porche Murphy and brother, Michael Murphy (Patti). He graduated from St. Paul’s High School in Covington and went on to receive a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from LSU in 1970. After graduation, John served for three years in the United States Air Force. He then began his distinguished career at Ethel-Albemarle and Shaw Companies until retirement. He was admired and well respected by his colleagues.
John was known as the best possible neighbor to have as he generously shared his talents in mending bicycles, lawn mowers, generators, and all manner of other mechanical devices. He was well-known in the local star-gazing community and enjoyed sharing his passion with others. In his younger years, John was a racing car enthusiast and enjoyed auto cross. He remained an active member of the Central Region Sports Car Club of America.
