Janice Lynn Pence McNabb, 75, of Baton Rouge went peacefully home to Jesus on February 19, 2024. She was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on May 2, 1948, and was married to her husband, George McNabb for 57 years. George and Janice started life together in the church nursery at Weller Avenue Baptist Church and were married in the same church several years later. Janice had a love of life, with a fun and youthful spirit. She loved traveling, having been to Scotland to visit the Clan McNabb burial grounds; to Iceland to hike into a glacier and to eat gas station ice cream during a snow storm, and to Colorado too many times to count. On one trip to Colorado, she was pulled over for speeding, wherein she asked the officer to hold her orange juice while she signed the ticket. On a later trip to Colorado, and to her son’s surprise, she decided to buy a cannabis lollipop just to check it off her list and to see what the fuss was all about. This led to her thinking she was going crazy and almost driving into the pond to try to find George as she was freaking out. To satisfy her spirit of adventure, she tried skiing, loved zip lining, and even white water rafting out west. Her favorite ride at Disney World was Soarin’. In her 30’s, Janice achieved the rank of Taekwondo red belt. In her early 40’s, she studied design and ultimately completed her degree in Education and had a 20-year career as a teacher at several schools, including Frost Elementary for 15 years. Janice loved teaching her kids and was known to take them on weekly vacations through Google Earth. But a highlight of her teaching career was when she led her entire class to Jesus at Brownfields Academy. Throughout her adventures and life, she was a talented painter and artist, lover of a good cup of coffee, and a caretaker to any animals that crossed her path that she thought needed her help. Janice loved her cats with a passion, making sure that their numerous bowls were never empty of the tenderest vittles. Ear mites never stood a chance with her cats! She was a friend to all animals, including the raccoons and opossums that would come to eat the cat food nightly, even feeding them by hand on occasion. One creature Janice hated was spiders. But even so, if she found one in the house, she would scoop it up and shoo it outside. Janice is survived by her husband, George McNabb; her son, Ryan and wife Brandie; granddaughters, Ainslie and Anniston; sister, Connie (Darrell) Mayes; brother, Gary (Ruth) Pence; sister-in-law, Mary Pence; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews who she loved; and cats, Crocket and Frito. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Reta and Roy Pence; brother, Barry Pence; nephew, Barry Pence Jr.; and her many aunts and uncles who were all precious to her. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The American Bible Society, Wounded Warriors, and The Fellowship of Christians and Jews. A visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA, 70815, on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 9 am until funeral service at 11 am conducted by Don Mayes. Burial will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Frank McNabb, Lee Burns, George Bratcher, Wiley Burns, Michael Loolara, Darrell Hatchell; and honorary pallbearer Trey McNabb.
