A survivor of 3 primary cancers for over 18 years, she passed away on January 24th, 2015, in Houston, TX at the age of 70 following a short battle with respiratory failure. Born on November 29, 1944, in Dallas, TX, she was the 1962 Valedictorian of Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, LA, and belonged to the school's cheerleading squad. She obtained her B.S. (1966) and M.S. (1968) in Chemistry from Louisiana State University where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and the Golden Girls of the LSU Tiger Band. Her professional career began as a Chemistry Instructor at Southern University and continued for 32 more years as a Research Chemist for PPG Industries. She shared her love and knowledge of chemistry with family and friends whether they were struggling to pass a chemistry class or unexpectedly in everyday situations. In 1971, Janet joined the Baton Rouge Chapter of the National Organization of Women and lobbied aggressively for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). She became an active member of the Montgomery County NOW Chapter in 2013. She was a past member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lake Charles, LA, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Barberton, OH, St. Alban's Chapel at LSU in Baton Rouge, LA, St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Murrysville, PA, and a current member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Houston, TX. Janet was devoted to her cat and 3 dogs, and was actively involved in supporting Hungry Dog Rescue in Montgomery, TX. She also spent hours feeding and watching birds in her backyard. Janet is survived by her husband, John Dwayne Driskill; daughter, Kristina Schori Pounds of Denver, CO; brother, Charles Granville Pounds and sister-in-law, Donna Harris Pounds of Alvin, TX; and nephews, Trevor Scott Pounds of Seattle, WA, Christopher Michael Pounds of Houston, TX and John Edward Pounds of Austin, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, Truman Edward Pounds and Marilyn Carlton Pounds of Dallas, TX. Visitation (12:00 PM) and Funeral Service (2:00 PM) will be held Saturday, February 7th, at Green Oaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, LA, with the Rev. Mark Holland officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (1515 Holcombe Blvd. Houston, TX 77030) or to your local animal rescue organization.
