Jan Lee Merrill, 55 years of age and lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, passed away Saturday December 3, 2011 while attending the LSU SEC Championship game in Atlanta, GA with his fiancée Sandra Porter. Jan was a graduate of Baton Rouge High and earned his bachelor’s degree in business from LSU. Jan was a Baton Rouge High School Bulldog basketball player, BREC umpire, and a sports statistician for high school football along with his lifelong friend Ted Castillo. He was a parishioner of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. He was a proud library technician with the EBR library system at Central Library. Jan’s passions were books, LSU football, LSU basketball, most sports, and he enjoyed movies, the outdoors and traveling. He is survived by his loving fiancé’ Sandra Porter; his beloved mother Marie A. Merrill; three brothers, Dennis Merrill and partner Byron Roberts, Craig Merrill and wife Sandy, and Glenn Merrill; only sister, Lisa Merrill Thompson and husband George and their children: his beloved nephew George “Charlie” Thompson, and sweet niece Sarah Thompson. Jan is also survived by his fiancé’s children, David, Carolyn and Gregg Porter and her grandchildren Brandon, Lauren, Briana, Hunter and Haley. He is preceded in death by his beloved father Charles A. Merrill. Visitation will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Saturday from 10:30, until mass of Christian burial at 11:30. Interment will follow at Greenoaks memorial Park. A special thanks to the chaplain of Atlanta Medical Center, Lauren Arnold.
