The Life of James Lee (Jack) Gilmore
The life of a true servant, highly favored with Godly wisdom, began on May 28, 1928 in St. Francisville, LA. James Lee Gilmore, affectionately known to most as “Jack,” was born to the late Tasco and Victoria Handy Gilmore. He professed his faith in Christ and was baptized under the leadership of Reverend J.D. Lands at the New Gideon Baptist Church, in Baton Rouge, LA, where he faithfully served 45+years as a deacon until his death. On February 16, 2018, God in his infinite wisdom chose to protect James from the troubles, toils, and tears of this life.
Jack always attributed his longevity in life to being an obedient and loving son to his parents where he constantly reminded us that we are to Honour thy Father and thy Mother: that thy days will be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee…
He worked for 26 years at Coca Cola Bottling Company and he retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board as a supervisor and also retired from the Louisiana State University Physical Plant. James truly believed in the value of hard work.
Jack was a soft spoken man who found pleasure in laughter, but had a serious nature; which earned him the reputation that he was someone who could be counted on. He was steadfast in his convictions about life and confident in his belief in God.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 66 years, Elma Brown Gilmore, of Baton Rouge, LA. A son, James Washington (Linda ), of New Orleans, LA; Five daughters, Alma Jean Joseph (Merkel) of Midwest City, OK; Deborah Gilmore, of Birmingham, AL; Sandra Myles (Larry), Illora Marie Gilmore, and Jamie Lee Gilmore-Douglas; all from Baton Rouge, LA.
As well as being a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren, he was loved like a father by them:
Katrina R. Singleton (Ramarize); LaSonya R. Butler (Billy); Cheryl Gilmore-Oubre (Walter); Ericka Gilmore, Karyn Gilmore, Ashley Myles, Christopher Patterson, Joshua, Jeremy, and Justin Douglas, of Baton Rouge, LA; Merkel Joseph, Jr., Moore, OK; Erick Gilmore and Karmen Gilmore, of Houston, TX; Hazel Joseph-McArdle (Ian), Bethesda, MD; Robin Joseph, Falls Church, VA; Talisha (TaTa) and Jamar Washington, of New Orleans, LA. He also leaves nine great-grandchildren, one sister, four sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 16 brothers and sisters and two grandchildren, Jamie & Jamar Washington.
“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith. 2Timothy 4: 6-7
