James Windell Crain, a resident of Lafayette, LA passed away peacefully at 8:27 AM on Thursday, November 30th, 2023. He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Imojean Payne Crain and three sons: Michael W. Crain of Lafayette, married to Maxie; Mark A. Crain of Hoover, Alabama married to Becky; and James A. Crain of Houston, married to Melody. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Jacob, Andrew, Aaron, Hannah, Cody and Chloe. Additionally, Jim has two surviving siblings: Vivian Sullivan of Pooler, GA, married to Wayne; and Joe Crain of Springfield, LA, married to Kathy. Born in Pine, Louisiana on October 17, 1937, James (called Windell by many in the family) graduated from Louisiana State University with a B. A. in Journalism. He worked as a reporter and editor at the State Times – Morning Advocate in Baton Rouge for many years. He was also a long-time employee of LSU in Public & University Relations. During the 1980’s, James was a successful entrepreneur and, after retirement, moved to Ponchatoula, LA where they lived for 14 years. In 2018, Jim and Jean moved to Lafayette to be closer to family. During retirement, he enjoyed gardening, writing, traveling, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Visitation will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December, 5th, 2023 at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Boulevard, Baton Rouge, LA 70815 with funeral services at 2:00 and burial to immediately follow.
