A native Oklahoman, born in Mannsville, Oklahoma, on September 29, 1912, she taught High School in Wilson, Oklahoma, for four years. She resided in Baton Rouge since 1942. Helen was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she taught First Grade children for fifteen years. She was a member of United Methodist Women, a member of Les Liseuse Book Club, past member of Epachol Study Club, a member of the Baton Rouge Country Club, a member of the Woman's Club, a member of the YWCA and Chairman of Y-Teens. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years: W.J. "Buck" Speakman; her parents: Garvie Lee&Cecil Henry Womble; and her great-grandson: Trey Speakman. Helen is survived by her two children: Becky Drouant of Kenner; and Josh Speakman&his wife, Martha of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren: Richard and Jon Paul Drouant, Clay and Christy Speakman, and Courtney Byrd; great-grandchildren: Maia, Kai, Sean and Meghan Drouant, Jessica Hailey and Madison Speakman, Braidyn, Mali and Teagan Byrd. A special thanks from the family to her caregivers: Florence, Cheryl and Janie. The graveside service was held at 1:00 pm Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Greenoaks Memorial Park Mausoleum under the direction of Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, conducted by the Rev. Katie Simpson of First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church.
