A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 1:30 pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for Harvey “David” Smith, Jr., who passed away peacefully on Friday, May 18, 2018 at his residence.
Reverend Miles Walsh, Pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, will be Celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services; Concelebrants will be Deacon David Dawson.
David was born May 19, 1942 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was an only child of Ollia Mae Britt Sawyer and Harvey David Smith, Sr. He attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he graduated in 1967 receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. David then attended Loyola University New Orleans College of Law where he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1970.
David was a member of the Louisiana State University Gymnastics team and a Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brother throughout his undergraduate studies. After completing Law School, David practiced Law for 47 years. David was a staff attorney for 23 years with Louisiana State Senate. He served on multiple divisions including 27 years as legal counsel to the Louisiana Board of Examiners of Nursing Facility Administrators, 10 years for the Sabine River Authority Sabine River Division Authority as well as Red River Waterway Commission and the tech-Vermillion Fresh Waterway Diversion Canal Authority. He completed his last 30 years as a loyal legal attorney for Thompson Meat Packers.
David married the love of his life, Sara Rose King Smith. He was an enthusiastic sailor and a member of Pontchartrain Yacht club. He was a parishioner at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years Sara, three sons, Carter A. Carroll and his wife, Melissa, and Britt K. Smith, and Bradley D. Smith; three grandchildren, Richard Aubrey Carroll, David Hurston Carroll, and Zechariah David Smith; and cousins Ellen Britt Klassen, Lexie Britt Allen, Charlotte Britt Rogers.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed on Wednesday May 23 from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm until the Burial Mass.
Pallbearers will be his sons Carter Alan Carroll, Britt Kennedy Smith, Bradley David Smith; three grandchildren, Richard Aubrey Carroll, David Hurston Carroll, and Zechariah David Smith; Jace James Pitre, Nicholas Kent Granier, William Law Granier, Robert Anthony King.
The family would like to thank staff Hospice of Baton Rouge, Dr. Vince Cataldo, Dustin Denicola N.P., Dr. George Simon from MD Anderson, Renee LaCaze Granier, Vanessa Rozas Pitre, Amanda Corry Faircloth, Donna Kay Lensing and Shannon Foster for providing unending love, care, and comfort.
