Harriet Roussel Mitchell, age 69, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023, at Ollie Steele Nursing Home in Baton Rouge. She was born at Tezcuco Plantation in Burnside but lived on Third Street in Lutcher, Louisiana, for over 20 years.
She graduated from John Curtis High School and Nicholls State University. She was employed by the East Baton Rouge School System for over 30 years as a special education teacher.
Harriet was preceded in death by parents, Allen “Sappo” Roussel and Rose Marion “Geet” Roussel, as well as brothers, Bernard Roussel and William “Billy” Allen. She is survived by her sister, Melvina Allen Matherne; brother-in-law, Newman “Pete” Matherne; sister-in-law, Karen Watts Allen. Loving nieces and nephews, Michael Matherne, Amy Matherne, William “Dirk” Allen, Kara Allen, Justin Allen, and Vicky Roussel also survive her.
Harriet enjoyed sports, quilting, sewing, shopping and traveling with her family. Aunt Harriet will be missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2130 Rectory Street, in Paulina, at 11 am on Friday, July 21, 2023. (Visitation in the church will be from 9 am to 11 am.)
