Gertrude "Gert" Leggio DeLouise

Oct. 28, 1931–Mar. 27, 2022 "See I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared." -Exodus 23:20 A Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude Leggio DeLouise will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at St. Jean Vianney in Baton Rouge. Visitation will begin at 9:00am with a recitation of the rosary at 9:30am. Interment will be held at Greenoaks Memorial Park followed by a reception to celebrate Gert's beautiful life at 1:00pm. On Sunday, March 27, 2022, Gert passed away peacefully at Williamsburg Senior Living in Baton Rouge. She was 90 years old, even though when asked, she would say that she was 100. Her love of the Virgin Mary was profoundly deep. She gained so much comfort by holding and reciting a rosary where she would place any problems or worries in Jesus and Mary's hands. Gertrude went to business college and later married her loving husband of 57 years Lucien G. DeLouise. She worked as an administrative assistant at Earl K. Long for over 40 years. Her work often brought her in contact with many doctors that she loved and highly respected. She would laugh and often brag that she opened and closed the hospital. Gert is survived by her daughters, Marla D. Gibbens and spouse Marc, and Michelle D. Williams and spouse Joe; daughter-in-law Ruth M. DeLouise; brother, Dr. Vincent Leggio, and special friend Barbara Dixon; sisters-in-law, Toody Leggio and Concetta DeLouise; grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as "Granny," Garrett Gibbens and spouse Stefania, Kyle Gibbens and spouse Megan, Alex Smith, Sara Smith, John DeLouise, Steven DeLouise, Elizabeth Mendoza, and Joe Mendoza; and great grandchildren that she adored immensely, Grant George Gibbens, Luke Devereaux Gibbens and Charlotte Rose Gibbens. Gert was exceptionally proud of her heritage and the mere mention of someone being Italian immediately gained credibility in her eyes. Holiday and Sunday dinners with her family were some of her most treasured memories. Those talks over the dinner table or in the kitchen washing dishes is what led to her close relationship with her many nieces and nephews. "Aunt Gert" was always in their corner cheering them on…she was truly their biggest fan. Gert loved her Wednesday night card games with her Bourree gang that spanned over 35 years. She also would hop in any car or bus that was headed to a casino to try her luck on the penny machines. Gertrude is preceded in death by her husband, Lucien G. DeLouise; son, Mark G. DeLouise; grandchildren, Christopher DeLouise and Grant Gibbens; parents, Anthony and Annie Pirello Leggio; brother, Dr. Anthony B. Leggio, and sisters, Maria Leggio Toups and Anna Lucille Leggio Distefano. Pallbearers will be Marc Gibbens, Garrett Gibbens, Kyle Gibbens, Joe Williams, Alex Smith, John DeLouise, Steven DeLouise and Paul Distefano.
