George Lester Boyd, 89, was born April 12, 1926 in Mix, Louisiana to William Boyd, Sr. and Virginia LeBeau Boyd. He was a long-time resident of New Roads. He was a U. S. Navy Veteran of the Logistics Support Company #68. George received the World War II Victory, Asiatic Pacific and American Area Medals. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, he attended Southern University. He later became employed by the U.S. Postal Service, for over 20 years. While employed there, he married the love of his life, Bertha Desormes Boyd. They were married for 58 years until her death. To that union was born two sons, George Francis and Gregory Michael whom are both deceased. Because of George’s dedication to civil rights, he joined the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where he worked for 20 years, and held position as an EEOC Investigator. He loved to read. His thirst for knowledge prepared him for good conversation, political debate and history lessons, for all who sat with attentative ears and plenty of questions. George’s joy, in later years, was being the family “history book”. He leaves to cherish his memory, a niece and primary caretaker, Carolyn Boyd Givens; a great nephew and caretaker, Joshua Givens; two loving brothers, Raphael (Stella) of Baton Rouge, James Larry (Phyllis) of Riverside, CA; and one sister Verna St. Amant (Eugene), Cypress, CA; two sisters-in-law, Velma Boyd and Annette Desormes Rodney; one brother-in-law, Alcide Desormes; daughter in law, Edna Bell Boyd; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
