Dorothy Louise Fields Halligan was born in Pennsylvania, on May 12, 1943, to John and Dora Fields. She attended Juniata Joint High School in Mifflintown, PA, and Shippensburg State College (now university) in Shippensburg, PA, where she acquired a B.A. in English. Dorothy met her late husband, Thomas Scherer Halligan, while he was stationed in Pennsylvania in the Air Force, and she moved to Baton Rouge, LA, to be with him. They married on August 28, 1971, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. She had grown up as a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church but later joined the Catholic Church. She remained a committed Christian throughout her entire life and wanted for all people to turn to and keep their faith in Jesus Christ so as to make it to Heaven. Dorothy worked as a copywriter, at a radio station, and as a secondary education teacher. She enjoyed sharing her extensive knowledge of English grammar and writing poetry and short stories. Dorothy is survived by her son, Thomas John Halligan, and numerous relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister and brother-in-law, Norma Irene Fields Baker and Robert Baker, and aunt, Irene “Reenee” A. Willoughby. A visitation for Dorothy was held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home (11000 Florida Blvd) on Tuesday, July 11, from 6-8 pm. The visitation resumed Wednesday morning at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church at 9 am until funeral mass at 10. Dorothy was laid to rest next to her husband at Roselawn Cemetery, and a reception followed in the church’s activity center.
