Donald W. Pennington

onald Ward Pennington, a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away at the age of 91 on September 4, 2021. Don was born in Pioneer, TX but spent most of his youth in Georgetown, TX and graduated from Southwestern University with a degree in chemistry. He served in the Us Air Force as an Atomic Weapons Specialist during the Korean War. He was a chemist with Dow Chemical for 34 years and held a variety of research management positions in both Texas and Louisiana Divisions and received 12 Dow patents. He retired in 1987 as Discovery Research Director. He then worked at LSU for 5 years as Director of the Office of Technology Transfer. He served for 12 years on the Board of Employment Development Services, a non-profit organization which facilitates employment for handicapped workers across the state. He was also interested in literacy and was a volunteer Reading Friend with Volunteers in Public Schools for over 9 years at Magnolia Elementary School. He served as an Election Commissioner for East Baton Rouge Parish. Don was a talented woodworker, mechanic, gardener, fix-it man, and volunteered his talents at First Methodist Church as a First Fixer, and at Magnolia Woods Elementary School as a maintenance man. As an avid bow-hunter, he hunted in Kerrville, TX for over 45 years with the same group of friends and with his sons. He invented and patented a wild game feeder which he sold all over the world to hunters and wildlife enthusiasts. His greatest joy was his family; his beloved wife, children, grandchildren and great grandson. Survivors, Beloved wife of 67 years, Joan Young Pennington; One Daughter, Susan Pennington Bordelon, husband Jacques of Friendswood, TX; Two Sons, Stephen Scott Pennington of Baton Rouge and Mark Alan Pennington, wife Cynthia of Slidell, LA; Sister, Sondra Kay Batson (Jim) Georgetown, TX; Grandchildren, Five, Brianna and Caylee Bordelon; Adam (Kate), great grandson River Pennington, Eric and Amy Pennington; and Numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in Death by Parents, Syble Ward Pennington and Archie Edwin Pennington; Sister, Annabelle Stone; Brother, Kenneth Wayne Pennington. Honors: Service Award from Employment Development Services United Methodist Women Service Award for his literacy work, Volunteers in Public Schools Golden Apple Award. The family would like to express their appreciation to his many doctors and Clarity Hospice for their excellent care over the years. Funeral Services will be held on September 9, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church, 930 North Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA. Visitation will begin 12:00 PM, with the service immediately following at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Magnolia Woods Elementary School, 760 Maxine Dr., Baton Rouge, 70808.
