Clifton O. Bingham, Jr. (Cliff) a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed from this life into the arms of his Lord and Savior on August 26, 2022. He was 74 years old. He was passionate about his love of God, his family, and his country.
He graduated from Baton Rouge High School and received his Bachelor of Science and Juris Doctorate degrees from Louisiana State University, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
After completing the bar, Cliff entered into a partnership with Jimmy Major which became Major Bingham, Attorneys at Law, specializing in corporate, governmental law, and complex litigation.
In 1986, he joined the Department of Justice, Attorney General Billy Guste's office in the civil litigation division and soon became chief of that division. Under the leadership of Attorney General Richard Ieyoub, he became Deputy Attorney General of the Civil Litigation Division and was instrumental in setting up DOJ satellite offices in major cities across the state. During his years at DOJ many high-profile cases became legal benchmarks.
During the Bobby Jindal administration, Cliff served as General Counsel for the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, under the direction of Garret Graves. This was the highlight of Cliff’s career since it gave him an opportunity to serve his beloved state of Louisiana in such a meaningful and lasting way. He remained in this position until he retired under John Bel Edwards administration
He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 44 years, Deanne Weeks Bingham. Also surviving him are his son Clifton O. Bingham, III, M.D. (Bing) (and his husband, Kenneth J. Cohen, M.D.), and two step-daughters, Sherry Lassere (and her husband, Daniel Lassere) and Melanie Altice (and her fiancée, Phillip Marchwinski)
Known to them as Poopah, he is survived by his grandchildren Daniel Capello (and his wife, Ashley Capello); Baron Gilmore; Christopher Merrifield; and Anna Parker Altice; and great-grandchildren, Gavyn Capello and Max Capello.
He is also survived by his treasured sisters, Caroline Sanders, Merrilyn Smith, and Maggie Bingham; two special cousins, Kim Gardiner and Brett Kriger; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other dear family members.
Preceding him in death are his parents Dr. and Mrs. Clifton O. Bingham, Sr., and his close friend and brother-in-law, James Alton Smith.
A memorial service will be held at Chapel on the Campus, 3355 Dalrymple Drive, Baton Rouge, on October 1, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
