While surrounded by his family, Charles Edward “Chuck” Schwing, was called home by the Lord on the morning of May 9,2024. He was born in Plaquemine La. On November 21,1929. He attended both LSU and Georgia Tech receiving both his Engineering and Architectural degrees from the latter. He held numerous positions in the Baton Rouge and Louisiana Chapters of the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) , as well as the National AIA, where he served as president in 1980. He was elected a Fellow of the AIA in 1977 and received the Medal of Honor AIA -LA in 1995.
His eye for proportion and design can be seen in his buildings throughout Baton Rouge, most notably. the Senate Chambers of the La. State Capitol which he restored after the 1970 bombing. It was his work on this project and his ability to balance innovation and historical preservation that led him to be appointed Louisiana State Capitol Architect in 1981 where he served until 1999 when he retired from Architecture. His love of art led him to serve on the first board of directors of the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum from its founding in 1962 to 1964 and again from 1984-86. He was also a lifetime member the LSU Museum of Art, where he was nominated for AFP Philanthropist of the year and received in 2016.
He was a man of many accomplishments the greatest of all which he will be remembered with much love is as Husband ,Daddy, and Gramps!!!
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents , Mary Howard Nadler and Calvin K Schwing, his sons Calvin “Beau” Schwing and Steven Blake Hofmann, wives Cynthia Walsh and Geraldine Hofmann Schwing.
He is survived by his wife, Patzy Roby Schwing; daughter, Therra “Terry” Cynthia Schwing; granddaughter, Haley Ann Hofmann Jones (Jared); and great-grandsons, Iain Edward Jones and Ronan William Jones.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Renee Harrington, Pam Henry, Claudette Duncan, Carla Brown, and Nova Brandon all of whom whose love, care and compassion made it possible for Chuck to have the best life possible until his departure .
Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service at Trinity Episcopal Church on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. The visitation will start at 9:00AM, followed by the service at 11:00AM. Burial will take place at Greenoaks Memorial Park.
