The retired proprietor of the Patio Lounge and resident of Baton Rouge, Charles Gant, Jr. died of natural causes on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at West Jefferson Medical Center. He was 89, a native of Wichita Falls, TX and proudly served his country as a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Visitation will be at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Friday, July 1, from 1 pm until Mass of Christian Burial at 2 pm celebrated by Rev. Nutan Minj. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Charlie is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marian Barcelona Gant; daughters, Charles Ann Gant Strickland (Charles) and Kim Gant Shackleton (Robert); niece, Becky Barcelona Horne (Mark); nephew, Dr. William Henry "Hank" Matthews; numerous grand nieces and nephews as well as great-grand nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Shelby Strickland Maloney (Steve), Adam Gant Shackleton (Claire), and Sydnie Lynn Shackleton Cole (Jared); and great-grandchildren, Colin Patrick, Charlie June and Samuel Arthur Maloney, and Petra Lynn Shackleton. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Gant, Sr.; mother, Sallie Gant; and a sister, Frances Gant Matthews. Charles was a graduate of Baton Rouge High School and a long time parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and was honored for 50 years as head usher for the 9:00 Mass. He was also a member of both the American Legion and Knights of Columbus for over 70 years. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
