Johnny Couvillion, 71, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2023, with his wife of fifty years, Gayle Domingue Couvillion, by his side. Visitation will be held at his life-long church home, St. Gerard Majella, on December 27, 2023, at 9:45 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. Fr. Tat Hoang, C.Ss.R., and Fr. Lamar Partin, C.Ss.R., will officiate. A private burial service will follow at a later date.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Gayle, his three children, Matthew Couvillion and wife Angela of Many, Louisiana, Cara Dolnik and husband Chris, of San Marcos, California, and Jacob Couvillion and wife Charmin of Prairieville, Louisiana. He was the best Paw-Paw ever to Lisa Webb and her husband Logan, Brandon Riley and fiancé Veronica Parks, J.P. and Beau Couvillion, Lorelai Dolnik, and Ema, Van, and Mac Webb. He will be greatly missed by his sisters Judith Ann Dias and Sandra Elder, his brothers: Kenneth and wife, Pippa; Steve and wife, Pat; E.J. and wife Suzanne; Brent and wife, Carolyn; and Eric and wife, Linda. His brothers-in-law, Chuck, Johnnie (Pam), and Ricky (Page) Domingue, who entrusted Gayle to his care all those years ago, never regretted that decision. The legions of men and women who were proud to call him Uncle Johnny will also hold them close to their hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hester and Dello Couvillion, his in-laws, Edgar and Hazel Domingue, his brothers-in-law, Russell Dias and Michael Elder, and his sister-in-law, Claudia Domingue. Johnny was born on September 12, 1952, the sixth of eight children. He was a proud 1970 graduate of Redemptorist High School. He loved his classmates and remembered his adventures and relationships at Redemptorist fondly, and remained close to them all these years. He was also a proud graduate of LSU, where he earned his degree while working full-time at National Grocery. Johnny was the life of the party – the first to get there and the last to leave. He loved to tell a good joke, especially those involving the antics of Boudreaux and his buddy Thibodeaux. Johnny never met a stranger, which embarrassed two of his kids until they figured out that this was a useful skill in life. (We aren’t sure that Jacob has ever been embarrassed in his life – he is definitely Johnny’s son.) He loved sports: he played center on the RHS football team, coached and cheered on all three of his children in football, baseball, and softball, and was a lifelong fan of LSU Athletics. He always embraced Cara, Matthew, and Jacob’s friends as if they were his own, and they all loved him very much. Johnny’s classmates from the Redemptorist High School Class of 1970 will serve as honorary pallbearers. A celebration of life will be planned in his honor later in 2024 for all to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Gerard Majella Church, 3808 St. Gerard Ave., Baton Rouge, LA, 70805.
