The Reverend Canon Ernest William Saik , a man of incredible faith, peacefully passed away at his home in Baton Rouge, LA on June 9, 2024. He was 74 years old. He was born on January 17, 1950 in Jackson, MS, to William Emile Saik and Luree Cross Saik.
Canon Ernie’s life was a testament to sacrifice, service and devotion to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. After graduating from Provine High School in Jackson, MS, he pursued a Bachelor of Art degree from Mississippi State University. Ernie also attended The University of the South in Sewanee, TN, where he received a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained a Deacon in The Episcopal Church in 1978, and in 1979 he was ordained to the priesthood. His call to the priesthood led to 45 years of ministry in the Episcopal/Anglican Church across Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana, where he exemplified service to our Lord. The last 10 years of his ministry were spent serving as Canon Pastor in the Anglican Diocese of the Western Gulf Coast (ACNA).
Beyond his distinguished vocation, Ernie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, “Papa” and friend. He shared 26 years of love and partnership with his beloved wife, Brenda Sullivan Saik, and together they raised two daughters, Rebecca Saik Falgoust (Edward) and Sarah Saik Smith (Ron). Ernie also found immense joy and pride in his grandchildren, Avery Luree and Ethan Joseph, and his step-grandsons Lance, Luke, and Landon. He is survived by his sister Norma King. Ernie is preceded in death by his son Christopher Thomas Saik, stepson David Earl Green Jr., his father William Emile Saik, and mother Luree Cross Saik.
Ernie’s hobbies included cooking, gardening, model trains, and antique shopping to name a few. For much of his life his vocation and priestly duties carried over into the lives of those who shared his hobbies. You didn’t have to attend Canon Ernie’s church to experience his ministry. His faithful service to our Lord has made a lasting impression on the community up until the day before his death.
As Ernie’s family and friends bid him farewell, they take comfort in knowing that he is at peace, surrounded by the love of his Heavenly Father. His legacy of selfless sacrifice, humility, kindness and love will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A memorial service to celebrate the eternal life of Canon Ernie will be held at Holy Cross Anglican Church, 630 Richland Ave., Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 2pm with a reception to follow.
All clergy are invited to vest with a white stole for the Procession of the service.
Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service from 12:30pm-1:30pm.
