Barbara Dianne "Anne" Carter Lord passed away peacefully at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital on November 9, 2020, at age 85. She was surrounded by as many of her family as could manage to sneak into ICU to be with her (including Rebekah, her granddaughter in Germany, by FaceTime).
Anne was born in Monroe, Louisiana; was voted Little Miss Winfield at age 2; and grew up in Baton Rouge. She graduated from University High School (always a source of great pride to her, since her four daughters and four of her grandchildren are also alums of UHS—GO CUBS!). She then studied English at LSU for three years until she met and married Jack Lord in a small wedding in front of the big fireplace at the BSU in December 1954.
Jack was in the U.S. Army and the couple headed to Presidio in Pacific Grove, CA for Jack's training in Russian code-breaking. They were then transferred to Fort Devens, in Massachusetts, and Catherine, the first of their four daughters, was born while they were there.
Anne loved all animals, but especially and particularly dogs. She instilled this love and compassion for animals in her daughters, who have carried on her great "tradition" of adopting shelter dogs and/or strays. Other of her menagerie over the years included cats, turtles, and hamsters. But she was never without a dog(s).
Anne was also in awe of God's creation of the Great Smoky Mountains. Although not much of a serious hiker, she loved being out on the trails or at Little Pigeon River or just gazing at the surrounding beauty in the Park. She loved the Smokies so much that she dreamed of one day pursuing two of her great loves by building a home there with a great big family room. Although this was never completely realized, in 1984 her daddy helped her by a small plot of land on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She named it Canaan.
Anne may best be known and remembered for her ministry with and love for college students, and helping them grow in their relationship with Jesus. Anne (along with Jack) first began her work with college students at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Alexandria, where she was not much older than the students they were leading. That ministry in Alexandria kicked off a "career" that would last for almost 54 years, moving to First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge and then to University Baptist Church. The lives Anne touched through her student ministry are in the thousands.
Anne loved to read (too many books, so little time). She was immensely creative, a gift she tirelessly used as she poured into her beloved students. She loved having only daughters, and her pride and joy grew exponentially with the birth of each of her nine grandchildren and she instantly fell in love with each one...even the boys! She had a subtle sense of humor, dry and witty, in conversation as well as in her creative writing.
She loved deeply and was loved deeply. Her investment in students for the sake of the Kingdom of her Savior continues to influence future generations for Christ. She will be greatly missed here but we rejoice "giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified (Mom) to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. For he has rescued (her) from the dominion of darkness and brought (her) into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom (she has) redemption, the forgiveness of sins." (Colossians 1:12)
She was preceded in death by her parents, John B. & Alberta P. Carter; and her husband, Jack V. Lord. She is survived by her four daughters: Catherine D. Lord, of Raleigh, NC; Janne E. Crews, of Crowley, LA; Nancy L. Cuccio and her husband Samuel, of Baton Rouge, LA; and Jacqueline L. Kirkpatrick and her husband Kyle, of Prilep, Macedonia; and her nine grandchildren: Kate and Sarah Crews; Matthew, Anna Catherine, Elizabeth and John Michael Cuccio; and Rebekah, Joshua and Daniel Kirkpatrick.
Family and friends are encouraged to attend the visitation which will be held at First Baptist Church (Baton Rouge) on Friday, Nov. 13, 2020 from 10 AM until the funeral service at 12 noon. There will be plenty of room for appropriate social distancing and we cherish the chance to celebrate Mom's life and glorify her Savior with all friends and family who can attend!
Graveside service will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the International Mission Board at https://www.imb.org/give/
