Jack lived most of his life in Lake Charles, Louisiana where he attended and graduated from McNeese State University. He and Helen, his wife of 61 years, moved to Fort Benning, Georgia when Jack commissioned in the Army. He began active duty military as a second lieutenant during the Korean Conflict. His civilian career began in the Food service Industry. Jack owned and operated three drive-in restaurants. Later he acquired a Chrysler Corporation Franchise and operated a Dodge dealership for 20 years. After moving to Bastrop, Texas Jack enjoyed many years of happiness with his wife and buddy, Helen, and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his beautiful tenor voice that many have enjoyed.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Helen, children, Debra Nelson Carson of Bastrop, Texas, Jack R. Nelson of Bastrop, Texas, Sharon Nelson Gassiott and her husband Bill of Bastrop, Texas, Melissa Nelson Young and her husband Lanny of Lake Charles, LA,sister, Billie Jo Nelson and her husband Howard P. Nelson, grandchildren, Katherine Cook, Douglas Cook, Miller Cook, Lindsey Colon and her husband Alex, Sarah Gassiott, Anna Gassiott, Jack A. Nelson, William Nelson, Katharine Carson, great-grandchildren Arianna, Alex, Gia and Bradley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bastrop, Texas or any Cancer Foundation of choice in loving memory of Jack M. Nelson.
A Celebration of Jack’s life will be at 10:30 on Friday, March 20, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Bastrop, Texas.
