Vernon L. Stone, age 97 of Bassett, Virginia passed away peacefully on Monday, January 11, 2021 at Mulberry Creek Nursing Home in Martinsville, Va. He was the first born to George Flemon Stone and Cora Belle Turner Stone on Oct 10, 1923 in War Eagle, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Louise Virginia Smith Stone, his brothers Rev. Irvin E. Stone, J. Conley Stone Sr. and sister Shirley S. Wells.
As a young WWII Army tank veteran assigned to the 16th Armored Division, his unit was attached to General Patton’s 3rd Army that made their way across France, Germany and into Czechoslovakia. After the war he was employed by Blue Ridge Hardware where he retired as manager with over 40 years of service. The ability to make friends easily and bring a smile served him well during his career and throughout his life. Spare time was enjoyed by playing golf and working in his yard.
He was a devoted lifelong member of Fort Trial Christian Church where he served in many capacities including Sunday school teacher, scoutmaster, Deacon and Elder. Singing in the church choir was especially enjoyable for him. He loved his family and was dedicated to making his community a better place to live.
He is survived by his sons; V. Leon Stone Jr (Sandra) of Charleston, SC, Michael D. Stone (Kathy) of Williamsburg, VA and a daughter Sylvia S. Robertson (Donnie) of Bassett, VA. grandsons; Jeffrey Stone of Williamsburg, VA and Douglas Stone of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, granddaughters Melody Weigel (Travis) of Little Rock, Ark and Kimberly Stone (Kevin) of Cary, NC. Two great granddaughters; Jessica and Erin Smith of Cary, NC. In addition, he is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also he is survived by his Aunt Odessa Turner Via and sister-in-laws; Ruby Smith Wright and Nancy Warren Stone.
Special thanks go to Vickie Craig for the care given at his home prior to 2016 when he moved to Mulberry Creek Assisted Living where he enjoyed a brand new family of residents and staff. Public viewing will be observed from Thursday, January 14 thru Saturday, January 16, 2021 daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Due to Covid-19, mask and social distancing will be required.
