Thomas David Gibbs Sr., 79, of Basset, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born in Bassett VA., November 6, 1935 to the late Ollis W. Gibbs and Lottie Young Gibbs. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Frances Gibbs Kerns; brothers Larry Gibbs and Roger Gray Gibbs.
David was a 1955 graduate of Bassett High School. He delivered milk for Clover Creamery starting out with his young family. He retired as a long-time routes salesman for Tom’s Snacks Food.
He loved playing golf and working on automobiles as his hobbies. He was the rare golfer whom would never practice but consistently shoot in the 70’s over 18 holes. His favorite shot was the power hook and his short game was phenomenal. He had three hole-in-ones over his lifetime, having one of them on a Par 4. He enjoyed singing gospel music with the men’s choir led by Elsworth Haley and Rudy Johnson. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends, grand-kids and grand-dogs.
He and Mary would ride on his Indian motorcycle when they started dating in high school. They continued riding motorcycles into his early fifties, one of their favorite jaunts would be to the beach or on the Blue Ridge Parkway, enjoying to take a break at Mabry’s Mill to order pancakes.
He and Mary were members of Stone Memorial Christian Church in Collinsville, VA.
David is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Dollarhite Gibbs, his step-mother, Irene Gibbs of Rocky Mount, VA.; daughter Nita Gibbs Millar and husband Hugh of Marshall, VA., son Thomas David Gibbs, Jr. and wife Christa of Purcellville, VA; grandchildren Jack and Emma Gibbs; brothers Jerry Gibbs and wife Addie of Martinsville, VA, Phillip Gibbs and wife Penny of Perry, GA; sisters Dot Gibbs Pierce of Ayden, NC., Sherry Gibbs Cameron and husband Fred of Lumberton, NC., and Martha Gibbs Brown and husband Shaun of Burnt Chimney.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Stone Memorial Christian Church in Collinsville where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.
