Mr. Hairston served in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Theater, during WWII and was retired after twenty years of service from General Motors. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hairston was preceded in death by his wife, Carmalita Williams Hairston, three sisters, Mary Turner Manns, Frances Akridge and Vernana Huddleston, six brothers, Aaron, David, Elvon, Thomas, John D. and Evert Lee Hairston.
He is survived by a dedicated, loving nephew and niece, Thomas and Donna Hairston, who were his caregivers in his final years, three daughters, Patricia Hollands and husband, James of Martinsville, Shirley Hairston Tucker and husband, Leroy of New York, NY, and Karen Hairston of Flint, MI, two sons, Martin Hairston and wife, Ada of Savannah, GA, and Philip Hairston and wife, Patricia, also of Flint, MI, twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express love and appreciation to very special caregivers Renee Robertson, Donna Pilson, Kiara France, Tierra Hairston (Mr. Hairston’s great niece) and Sharon Watkins. Gratitude is also expressed to Mountain Valley Hospice.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Collins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to that service.
Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Hairston Family Cemetery, Sunset Drive, Bassett, VA.
