He was born in Forsythe County, N.C., October 9, 1920, a son of the late Reuben P. and Nellie Carden Scott. Also preceding him in death was his wife of over 40 years, Pauline Deisher Scott, his brother, Robert Scott, sisters, Ethel (Grady) Helms, Viola (Clarence) Bennett, Hazel (Brantley) Hartman, and Myrtle (Taft) Matthews.
R.P. was a graduate of Bassett High School, Bassett, and National Business College, Roanoke, VA. During World War II he served in the Air Transport Command, U.S. Air Force, in India and China. Upon returning home after his military service, he rejoined Bassett Furniture Industries, retiring in 1986 after 48 years of service. He retired as Vice President and Manager of J. D. Bassett Mfg. Co. He attended Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church.
He is survived by 13 nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 12 Noon Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett with the Rev. Russ Gresham officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville with military rites provided by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville & Henry County.
The family will receive friends from 11 A.M. to 12 prior to the service at Collins. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Bassett Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 510, Bassett, VA 24055.
