Mary M. "Tootsie" Carter

Mrs. Mary M. “Tootsie” Carter, age 85 of Bassett, VA., passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2019. She had been in declining health. She was born on August 11, 1933 in Bassett, VA. to Thomas Dalton Mayes and Virginia Elizabeth Lawless Mayes. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Howard Steven Carter, four sisters, Doris Frances Rogers, Mable Stevenson, Emma Hodnett, Annie Mae Rogers and one brother, Edward Mannings.

She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Ann Martin and husband,Kenny, Donna Marie McSwain and husband, Micah all of Bassett, VA., Vickie Lynn Chitwood and fiance, Glenn Roycroft of Martinsville, VA., two sons, Ricky Allen Chitwood and wife, Beverly of Tazewell, VA., Steven Shane Carter and wife, Donna of Ridgeway, VA., two sisters, Gloria Irene Gabbard of Frankfort, KY., Barbara Lee Cochran of Martinsville, VA., one brother, Thomas Franklin Mayes of Bassett, VA., 8 Grandchildren and 10 Great-Grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 5:00 PM Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Collins Funeral Home Chapel in Bassett, Virginia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to the service from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.
