Elder Hairston was born on September 1, 1922 in Henry County, VA to the late James Isaac Hairston and the late Bertha Gallant Hairston. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Madgline Morris Hairston, a daughter, Shirley H. Redd, four sisters, Bessie Snells, Ruby McGee, Mildred Holt, Bertha Byrd Stokes, four brothers, Lester Hairston, Columbus Hairston, Pete Hairston and Odell Hairston. He pastored several churches in the Pentecostal Holiness faith. He was a member of the Greater Love Ministries. He served in the U.S. Navy 1943 to 1945. He was a member of the American Legion Homer Dillard Post #78. He was retired from Nationwide Homes and later worked for Bassett Mirror.
Elder Hairston is survived by four sons, Ellis Hairston (Janis), Gary L. Hairston (Sharon), Leonard E. Hairston (Sherry), Leon J. Hairston (Ellen), one sister, Mae Preston, two brothers, Lazarus Hairston and Elijah "E.C." Hairston, 21 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 26 great-great grandchildren and host of nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12 PM. at The Greater International Pentecostal Holiness Church “Assembly Building”, 980 Carver Road, Martinsville, VA 24112 with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 PM. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens with Military Rites to be conducted by the Martinsville-Henry County, Veterans Honor Guard.
