Charles, known as Charlie Bill to his family and friends, was born on August 26, 1927, in Chatham, Virginia to Harry Lynn and Frances Garber Moore. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 67 years, Dorothy Johnston Moore; daughter, Patricia Huron-Moore, son-in-law David Huron-Moore; brothers, James Richard Moore and Dr. Harry Lynn Moore, Jr., sister-in-law, Eloise H. Moore; and sister-in-law, Judith M. Moore.
In 1949 Charlie Bill graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VA Tech) with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. While there he met and later married his classmate, Dorothy Johnston, who graduated with a degree in civil engineering. Charlie Bill followed his calling and continued his education graduating from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond in 1953 and earned a master’s degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He also obtained a master’s degree in industrial psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Together he and Dorothy faithfully served many Presbyterian communities where Charlie Bill was minister including Elkins, West Virginia and various communities in Virginia including Bridgewater, Dayton, Glasgow, and Collinsville. Following retirement, he served as a substitute minister in Bluefield and throughout the New River Valley. In 2000, he and Dorothy moved to King’s Grant Retirement Community.
During his lifetime he had many interests, enjoying all things mechanical. He was a life-long learner and read extensively. He was a devoted and loving father, assisting his children with various tasks and projects from homework to equestrian endeavors and home building. He and Dorothy were devoted square dancers, making many friends during their travels to practices and competitions. In joy and in sorrow, his life was guided by deep faith. He possessed a peaceful countenance, a sense of humor and a grateful heart. His humility and calm and gentle nature endeared him to family, friends, parishioners, and caregivers.
He is survived by his children and spouses Stephen A. Moore (Lisa) of Wytheville, Virginia, and Dr. Carolyn A. Moore (Allie) of Morehead, Kentucky; grandchildren, Genevieve Moore Ritter (Jamie) of Wytheville, Virginia, and Megan Elizabeth Moore of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; great-grandchildren Cade Ashton Ritter and Evalyn Love Ritter; brother Dr. John Garber Moore; and many nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for the loving care provided by the staff of King’s Grant and by Mountain Valley Hospice.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 21, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville, 4500 Kings Mountain Road, Collinsville, VA. A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Charles William Moore will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev.John Wiederholt and Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.
