He was born July 5, 1934 in Patrick County to Walter Gains Nelson and Florence Hill Nelson, who preceded him in death. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Emma Tucker, Annie Sue Amos, Lorene Bryant, Nancy Wood and his brothers: George Thomas Nelson and Walter Holmes Nelson.
Mr. Nelson served in the United States Army and had been stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas for most of his military career. He was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, usher, Sunday school teacher, in the bus ministry and on the building and grounds committee. He had been employed by Stanley Furniture for 40 years where he was a materials warehouse supervisor. Before retiring, he had a lawn mower and tractor parts business.
He is survived by his wife, Willie Nelson of the home, a daughter: Debbie Blanzy and husband, Don of Charlotte, N.C.; a son: Billy Nelson of Bronx, New York; three grandchildren: Sarah Abare and husband Luke of Seattle, Washington, Jenni Windham and husband, Chad and Abbi Johnson and husband, Nathan all of Charlotte, NC and four great-grandchildren: Jake Medley, Evelyn Johnson, Liam Johnson and Jocelyn Windham.
The Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Collins Funeral Home, Bassett with Dr. Joey McNeil and Dr. Lew Bennett officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Henry Memorial Park. Military Honors will be performed by The Martinsville and Henry County Honor Guard.
