

Verice was born Aug. 23, 1919 in Bond Township, Lawrence County, IL to Hubert Cleveland and Millie Opal (Thompson) Childress. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Maxine L. Hendry on Sep. 18, 1948 at the First United Methodist Church in Peoria. Surviving are his wife, sons Richard (Kil) Childress of Bartonville, Thomas Childress of Peoria, daughters: Kathleen (Tod) Larke of Bloomington, Christine Childress of Bartonville, six granddaughters: Denise (Darren) Collings, Molly Childress, Brianne (Dustin) Weed, Teagan Larke, Caroline and Echo Miller. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, two sisters: Huberta Schultz, Barbara Moore, three brothers: Charles, Larry (Faye), James Andrew Childress, and numerous nieces and nephews. Chili was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Clara Ann Childress, Rosemary Peterson, Helen Atkinsin, and three brothers: Carl, John, and George.
A 1937 graduate of Lawrenceville High School in Lawrenceville, Il. He then graduated Brown’s Business College, and attended Bradley University. He worked as a Machinist for Hyster for 27 years, until its closing. He then worked for J.H. Benedict CO. Inc., as a Machinist for six years retiring in 1984.
Chili enjoyed fishing, gardening, family genealogy, and mushroom hunting. He was an avid Chicago Cub and Bear fan. He was a member of the Valley of Peoria Scottish Rite, the Mohammed Shrine, and a 50 year member of the Alta Masonic Lodge #748.
Visitation will be Tuesday May 5, 2015 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel. A Masonic service will follow the visitation at 6 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services.
Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alta Masonic Lodge # 748.
