Sister Edilberta "Iris" Sánchez De León , 88, of Bartonville, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at her home at St. Benedict's Abbey. She was born on February 25, 1936 in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, a daughter of Alberto Sánchez and Juanita (De León) Sánchez.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Juan Domingo Sánchez De León and José Ramón Sánchez De León.
Iris is survived by her three sisters, Carmen María Sánchez De León, Julia Sánchez De León and María Esther Sánchez De León; one brother, Juan Sánchez De León; many nephews and nieces; and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
Iris graduated from Teodoro Aguilar Mora High School where she did vocational training and learned how to sow. She was a seamstress and did so for 76 years. Even a year ago, she crocheted little hats and booties for newborn children. She did about 20 sets and donated them to the OSF Hospital neonatal unit. She did wedding dresses, quinceañera dresses, school uniforms and many more clothing. She sometimes wore her own clothing.
She loved to sow, crochet, knit, paint and coloring. She worked until about a week before her passing.
She was loved by everyone. She was a sweetheart and an angel. She will be missed by all.
Iris's family has arranged a celebration of life service at 3:00 pm on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at St. Benedict's Abbey in Bartonville. Her cremation was entrusted to the Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel.
