He was born on January 22, 1922 in Peoria to William and Inez J (Harvey) Wendland. He married Dorothy Compton on October 5, 1946 in Peoria. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Shirley Taylor.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy, three nephews, James R. (Dolly) Wendland, Robert (Sharon) Compton and Michael (Marie) Compton, five nieces, Sue Taylor Mitchell, Betty Compton, Terry Carpenter, Barb Hunt and Linda Rodriguez, one great nephew, James R. (Tina) Wendland Jr.; four great-nieces, Shirlee (Chris Zook) Wendland, Robin (Mike) Floyd, Angie Compton, and Tonya (Terry) Taylor, 10 great-great-nieces, Megan and Sarah Wendland; Cassidy Mullen, Ashley Floyd, Aleesha Common, Alexis, Kayla, Sabrena, Shayla, and Jenna Tinkham and one great-great-great niece, Marih Huffman.
Robert was in the U.S. Army during W.W.II and served 32 months in Egypt until being honorably discharged in 1946. He was a life member of the VFW Post 2078 in East Peoria and a member of the Joseph Robbins Masonic Lodge # 930 A.F. & A.M. in Bartonville. He worked many years as a laborer with O Frank Heinz, retiring in 1984 and was a member of the Laborer’s Union Local 165. Robert loved playing horseshoes, golf, bowling and baseball. He played for several area Baseball teams including Dad’s Root Beer.
A funeral service will be Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 10:00 am with Masonic services beginning at 9:45 am, and visitation starting at 9:00 am at Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel. The Rev. Steve Weber will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
