He was born October 19, 1934 in Peoria to Orville and Louise (Newell) Howard. He married Laura "Jan" Braden on April 13, 1954. She passed away March 28, 2023.
Robert was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Larry Howard and one nephew, Larry Dean Howard.
He survived by his children, Denny (Debbie) Howard, Diane (Barry) Adkins, and Betsy (Bill) Irving; grandchildren, Shannon Adkins-Wall, Amanda (Jason) Strandberg, Erin (Andrew) Balek, Jonathan (Chelsey) Irving, Bradley Irving, Josh (Alica) Howard, Rebecca Howard, and Tim (Kelsey) Howard; thirteen great- grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; one sister Sally Yocum; two sisters-in-law, Kate Badgerow and Carol Howard.
Robert led a life marked by service, commitment, and passion for his community. He served honorably in the United States Navy.
He was also an active and devoted member of the Hanna City Presbyterian Church.
After many years of service, Robert retired from his role in security at Caterpillar, Inc.
He joined the local volunteer fire department, where he selflessly responded to countless emergencies and helped protect his neighbors. His commitment to education and community development led him to serve as a member of the school board.
Robert generously gave his time and energy to volunteer at OSF Healthcare, providing comfort and assistance to patients and their families during their times of need. Lastly, his involvement in the River Valley Antique Auto Club showcased his love for classic cars and camaraderie with fellow enthusiasts.
When his son is asked how he would describe his father, his reply is, "Dad was the real life version of the fictional character Andy Griffith. He worked as a small town police officer and later a security officer. He was tough-minded while being kind-hearted. There is not even one account of him raising his voice against us kids or toward our mother. He was a faithful husband, father and friend; motivated by his faith in God, rooted in deep Christian principles. His character was evidenced in his enduring and endearing love in both words and deeds."
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 9 - 10:30 a.m. at Hanna City Presbyterian Church, with a celebration of life to follow starting at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will immediately follow services at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Hanna City.
Memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to Hanna City Presbyterian Church or Peoria Honor Flight.
Cremation rites have been accorded, Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
