Don was born on April 2, 1930 in Rockford, Illinois to Floyd and Elvira (Peterson) Holmes. He married Edith J. "Mandy" Light on February 24, 1951 in Bartonville. She preceded him in death on July 13, 2018.
Also preceding him in death are his parents; his brother, Robert Holmes; and sisters, Lois Ames, Beverly Snodgrass, and Sharon Garner.
He is survived by his children, Donald Holmes Jr. (Suzanne) of Bartonville, Joy Lynn Holmes (J.D. Larkin) of Kenney; granddaughter, Leanna Crichton (John) of Peoria; siblings, Larry Holmes of Washington, Jean Alexander of Salina, OK; and several nieces and nephews.
Don worked as a machine operator for Caterpillar for 33 years until his retirement. After he retired, he continued to work delivering meals for the Neighborhood House.
Don was very active in his community. He was a past Deacon at Trinity Presbyterian Church, a member of the VFW, and Post 3883. He bowled in a league, coached softball for the Limestone Girls Softball Association, and Cub Scouts - which was he very active in.
He loved to go camping, fishing and hunting. He was a die hard Cubs fan.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20,2024, at 11a.m., with a visitation one hour prior, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Bartonville.
