He was born on November 2, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa to Irvine and Ruth Conkel. Bill joined the US Army and was stationed in post war Dongducheon, South Korea where he served at Camp Casey with his brothers in arms who became family.
Bill had a son; Billy Conkel, from a previous marriage and after moving to Tennessee with his beloved Connie, they had 2 daughters, Tricia and Melissa.
Bill began his business career with 3M and later retired from FedEx. When Bill wasn’t working, he had a passion for Volkswagen Bugs. He spent many hours tinkering around in the shop and building Bugs by hand from the ground up. Bill helped start the Mid-South VW Club where he enjoyed the family and brotherhood for many years.
He is survived by his sister Vanessa Luellen of Iowa. His son William John Conkel (Jacquelyn) and his children Megan Barnes, Craig Conkel (Shylo) and Chelsee Conkel (Matthew) of Iowa. His daughter Melissa Joy Cooper and her sons Cameron and Caelan Cooper all of South Carolina. Scott Leggett (Tricia) and his children Riley, Olivia and Alyssa Leggett of Tennessee as well as 4 great grandchildren and expecting 1 more.
The family will receive family and friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Waypoint Baptist Church, 5586 Stage Rd. Bartlett, TN 38134. There will be a Celebration of Life service beginning at 11:00 AM at Waypoint Baptist Church, 5586 Stage Rd. Bartlett, TN 38134. Immediately following interment will take place at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd. Bartlett, TN 38133.
