Robert WF Mosby

Robert “Bob” William Franklin Mosby was born in Mounds, Illinois, on January 1, 1924, and died at the age of 92 on September 9, 2016, in Memphis, Tennessee. He moved with his parents to Jackson, Tennessee in 1927. He attended public school in Jackson and one year at Lambuth College before entering the United States Navy Reserve on July 1, 1943, in the midst of World War II. After serving three years in the U.S. Navy, he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University in June 1948. After graduation, he joined the Illinois Central Railroad engineering department in Jackson and transferred to the office of Chief Engineer in Chicago, Illinois. On May 16, 1953, he married Clara Marie Huber from Linton, Indiana.

In January 1956, he left the ICRR for Sverdrup and Parcel consulting engineers in St. Louis, Missouri. In July 1958, he moved his family to Memphis where he worked for Harland Bartholomew & Associates, Portland Cement Association, and Fischer Concrete. In July 1972, he joined asphalt paving contractor Lehman-Roberts Company and retired as Vice President of Engineering on January 1, 1993.

After retiring, he and Clara completed their visits to all 50 state capitals, and he began volunteering as a Key Man at Methodist North Hospital and as a driver for the Al Chymia Shrine hospital staff transporting patients to Shriners’ Hospitals for Children in St. Louis, Galveston, and Cincinnati.

He was a life member of the following organizations: the American Society of Civil Engineers (past president of Memphis branch), the Engineers Club of Memphis (president in 1971), the Memphis Scottish Rite, and the Al Chymia Shrine. He was a 50 year member of Jackson Lodge #45 F&AM, and a 32 degree Knight Commander of the Court of Honor.

He was a life-long Methodist and a member of Scenic Hills United Methodist Church since 1959 where he faithfully served in many capacities including the finance committee, board of trustees, recording secretary of the administrative board, and Sunday school superintendent.

His parents, Robert Fisher and Aolia Mae Mosby, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Clara; 3 daughters: Cynthia Jaggers (Jim), Janet Ross, and Rebecca Halvorson (Joel), all of Bartlett, Tennessee; 9 grandchildren: Justin, Jeremy, Jennifer, and Will Jaggers, Paul, Heather, and Jacob Ross, and Olivia and Ben Halvorson; and 3 great-grandchildren: Patrick and Grace Jaggers, and Preston Ross.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 15th from 5-7 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway. A Celebration of Life service will be Friday, September 16th at 2 p.m. at Scenic Hills United Methodist Church, 2847 Pembroke Road. Burial will follow at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway. The family invites friends to join them for a meal at the church following the burial.
