Martha Ellen Williams Burrell, 82 passed away August 12, 2012. Martha was born June 21, 1930 in Elliot, MS to Hugh and Francis Williams. She grew up in Memphis and spent summers with her grandparents in Hickory Valley, TN. She was a 1948 graduate of Southside High School. Martha met her future husband, Clifford Wayne Burrell while attending Boulevard Baptist Church, where they were later married on February 16, 1951. Martha and Wayne raised three sons. Martha was always an active church member, teaching many Sunday school classes, Bible Studies and Deaf Ministries. After raising her family she returned to school to receive her teaching certification and taught deaf and special education for 23 years in the Houston, Texas area. After she and her husband retired they returned to Memphis where she was a member of Kirby Woods Baptist Church. Martha is survived by her husband of 61 years, Wayne; children, Cliff (Melissa) Burrell of Germantown, TN, Craig (Charlotte) Burrell of Ft. Worth, TX and Allen (Angela) Burrell of Union, MS; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Underwood, Holly (Cory) Chappell, Matt Burrell, Andy Burrell, Cody (Angela) Burrell; five great grandchildren and younger sister, Barbara (Doug) Pierce. She was preceded in death by her parents and her older sister, Dorothy Weddle and brother-in-law, Walter Weddle. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 15 from 11 a.m. until service time at 12 p.m. at Kirby Woods Baptist Church on Poplar Ave. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Southwoods Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Martha requested memorials be made to Samaritan’s Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org) or to Kirby Woods Baptist Church Mission’s program.
