Janet (Cordray) Garner Bauman entered eternal rest on January 14, 2024. Janet was born in Owosso, Michigan on February 26, 1935 to Milford M. Corday and Helen Beck Cordray. Janet was preceded in death by her parents Milford and Helen. She is survived by her four brothers, James (Joy) Cordray, Jon (Melanie) Cordray, George (Danita) Cordray and Kim (Lisa) Cordray. She is survived by her son Scott (Mary) Garner and her daughter Ellen (Mick) Hovanec. Janet loved and cherished her six grandchildren Christina (Nathaniel) Moreno Coon, Saul (Megan) Moreno, Samuel Garner, Sadie Garner, Michael Hovanec and Sarah (Hunter) Hovanec Tew. In addition she is survived by eight great grandchildren.
Janet graduated from Michigan State University, where she met and married James Garner. They moved to California where she taught art and foreign languages at Lathrop Junior High School for 30 years. She loved her chosen profession of being a teacher.
Janet loved Drummond Island, Michigan, where she summered with her family in a cabin growing up. She later bought her own cabin on Drummond Island and spent extended periods of time living there. She loved history and genealogy. Janet especially enjoyed Scottish, English and Native American history. She enjoyed traveling across the United States and visiting Native American reservations, where she collected art and jewelry. Janet later discovered photography while seeking her Masters Degree at the University of California, Irvine. As a result of this, she became an avid photographer. She was a long-standing member of Tustin Presbyterian Church. She was proud to be a Deacon and a member of the choir. Janet enjoyed antiquing and going to garage sales. She especially loved spending time with her family on Drummond Island.
Janet will be deeply missed by her family, friends and community.
The Memorial Service for Janet will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, February 17th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 5411 Main Street, Sylvania, Ohio. Reception will be at the Family Center located across the street after the service. The family is being served by Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Bartlett, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society.
