George Donald Holmes, 86, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at his home in Collierville, Tennessee, with his wife of 66 years, Ginger, by his side. He was born on July 18, 1935, in Memphis, Tennessee, to George Asbury and Lillian Mable McOwen Holmes.
A 1953 graduate of Treadwell High School, he attended basic training in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve at Camp Lejeune and was honorably discharged in 1956, after which he enlisted in the United States Army serving for the Commanding General at Fort Knox. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1959.
He became a Certified Public Accountant on January 1, 1960, but always aspired for higher education. He eventually earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Accounting from Memphis State University in 1973. At that time, he and Ginger had three young children.
He maintained his private accounting firm for many years before accepting an offer to become Chief Financial Officer of Strike King Lure Company, eventually transitioning to the same position at Bill Dance Outdoors where he worked until he retired.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Asbury and Lillian Mable McOwen Holmes, and his sister, Elaine Snyder (Al).
He is survived by his wife, Mary Virginia “Ginger” Hale Holmes, his brother, Raymond Holmes (Sandra) his three children, Scott Holmes (Kathy), Steve Holmes, Donna Robb (Brad), grandchildren Brandon Holmes, Lindsey Holmes Miller (Samuel), Blake Holmes (Emma), Justin Robb, Haley Robb, two great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends who will forever remember his warm smile, endearing personality and strikingly quick wit.
Through the years, he enjoyed running in various distance racing events, fishing, boating, spending time with family and friends and walking his faithful dogs Fudge and Indie.
He maintained a strong Christian faith throughout his lifetime.
A memorial service for George will be held Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133, a visitation will be held an hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Baptist Cancer Center or the charity of your choice.
