Donald Ray Remington was born on December 3, 1935, in Stillwater, OK to Doris and Francis Remington. An energetic young man, he was raised in OKC where he enjoyed hunting and trapping with his friends, football and wrestling. Don graduated from Oklahoma State University (OSU), where he was a math major and electrical engineering student. He was a state championship wrestling contender for several years, and was also a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. It was here at OSU where Don first came into contact with The Navigators ministry, a non denominational Christian organization focused on discipleship, and committed his life to our Lord Jesus Christ.
After completing his Electrical Engineering degree, he moved to Boston, taking a professorship with Wentworth Institute of Technology, first in the nuclear department and later in the electrical department. During his 35-year tenure Don loved to play basketball and racquetball with his students and colleagues, where he was known for his “competitiveness”. In the early years, Don also continued his Air National Guard service as an Airman 1st Class, working in radar and navigation systems.
Through The Navigators Don met Barbara Jill Kriebel, whom he married on June 19, 1965. Together they would raise three children – Carl, Ruth and Nathan – while living in Needham, MA, as well as two years in Tel Aviv, Israel, where Don taught electronics in Hebrew at an Israeli university.
They returned to the States in 1973, where Don resumed his teaching career at Wentworth and the family enjoyed years of backpacking trips into the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Colorado Rockies where he had hiked as a younger man. Often, he would invite international students on multi-day trips to enjoy the wonders of God's creation.
Over the years, Don and Jill were active in their local churches through a variety of ministries including serving as a deacon, leading Bible studies, and on a variety of committees at Second Baptist Church of Newton Upper Falls MA, Portland Avenue Baptist Church OKC, and Bellevue Baptist Church Memphis. Throughout their lives they have been involved in missions, including outreach to the Jewish people, and giving generously of their time and resources. While in Memphis, Don also worked with the local Gideon's chapter doing prison ministry and Bible distribution at local schools and campuses, as well as remaining involved in Navigator ministry activities.
Don will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, excellent teacher, fun-loving adventurer, but above all as a committed and generous servant to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Don was preceded by his son Nathan Alan Remington and by Dons parents. He is survived by his wife Jill Remington, his younger sister Thyra Lombard, his younger brother Dale Remington, his son Carl, wife Jane and their 4 children Rachel, Jesse, Sarah, Anna, daughter Ruth Murphy, husband Terry and their 3 children Jeneal, Katelyn, David and his wife Krista and their expected son Bo.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 6, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133. A funeral service will occur Saturday, August 7, 2021 from 10:00 AM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.
