Charlie Jean “CJ” Mathews (71) passed away at home surrounded by family and went to be with her savior Jesus Christ in the early morning of August 4, 2024, due to an 11-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Merigold, MS on July 20, 1953 to Charlie and Everlena “Peggy” Taylor. She was a member of Vollintine Baptist Church along with her mother. She married Royal Winston Mathews on August 5, 1972. From that union, they had 2 children, Latassia and Cedric. They also raised Deterrance “Bebop” McCray and Anastasia Krizan. Jean was a devoted daughter, faithful wife, proud mother, and loving grandmother. She was known for her love for Jesus, family, and music. Charlie Jean was a generous and joyous soul. She had a fun sense of humor and would make smart sarcastic comments. She enjoyed family time and watching movies. CJ and her mother, Everlena would sit on the porch for hours talking and watching the world go by. Some would think they were friends instead of mother/daughter because they went and did everything together. Jean also took care of her mother until her health began to fail due to Alzheimer’s. At that time, CJ and Peggy were moved into Cedric and Sarah’s home where they spent everyday together and enjoyed each other’s company. Jean was a lifetime fan (in love with) of Chuck Norris especially Walker Texas Ranger.
Charlie Jean was preceded in death by her father Charlie Taylor, husband Royal Mathews, and daughter Latassia. She is survived by her mother Everlena Taylor; son Cedric Mathews and his wife Sarah, and grandchildren Tye Mathews, Johnathan Austin, and Elizabeth Austin; Deterrance McCray and Anastasia Krizan and her husband Robert.
