Bernard Wilson Cogbill (Bernie) held many roles in his time. The characters of devoted husband, compassionate father, playful grandfather, big brother, loving uncle, friend, talented entrepreneur, christian, and a myriad of others composed the tall stature on a petite framed man. He could often be caught anonymously paying a fellow diner’s bill at a restaurant just because he noticed they were having a bad day. He strove to brighten others’ days with no credit or reward in it. His presence for encouraging and teaching others will never diminish.
Bernie passed away on November 22, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was 80 years young living in Arlington, TN with his beautiful wife, Lawanda ‘Mickie’ Cogbill, of 57 years of marriage. Born in Brownsville, TN he spent his youth working in a grocery store, playing high school football, and prevailing in teen antics before moving on to the Air Force. Upon his return from services, he worked with his uncle in the construction industry, providing outstanding craftsmanship all around Memphis and surrounding areas. He was immediately hooked to the craft for over the next five decades working until 6 months prior to his passing as a general contractor, cabinet maker, and owner of Cogbill Construction & Remodeling. He often was heard to profess that you never work a day in your life if you love what you do. His crews and family knew his statement to be true as he altruistically loved his career and those who were part of it. He enjoyed working so much that you could find him on weekends resting upon his tractor in ‘God’s Country’,their ranch, in Grand Junction, TN cutting acres upon acres of grass to ‘relax’. He was a man of consistency and precision with an uncanny attention to detail. The only things he loved more than work and the outdoors were his family and Jesus. Bernie was so proud of his people and the blessing of life. He would always share this piece of advice before a big journey or trial…one must remember that they wear Christ’s name first and the familial name of Cogbill second. Be true to who created you.
Bernie also known lovingly as Papaw, leaves behind many who will carry him in their hearts, Mickie, Charles, Cindy, Brian, Dennis, Debbie, Teresa, Kyle, Cody, Naomi, Christopher, Elizabeth, and Myra. There are many more that call him friend.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for any donations to be made to St. Jude or TN Children’s home (https://www.tennesseechildrenshome.org)
Visitation will be Monday, November 28, 5-7pm. Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, November 29, 10am at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 N. Germantown Pkwy.
