Stanley E. “Ed/Eddy” Hignett passed from pneumonia on November 2, 2021 at Loma Linda University Hospital at the age of 81.
Ed was born in Wallace, Idaho, on November 23, 1939, to Stanley and Nadyn Hignett. When he was 2 years old his father passed away and they moved to Walla Walla, Washington to live with his grandmother. His school days were all spent in the Walla Walla area. After graduating from Wa-Hi (Walla Walla High School) in 1958, he attended aviation technical school for two years and graduated with an Airframe and Power Plant license. There were limited prospects in the aviation industry at the time so he enrolled in college at Eastern Washington State in Cheney, Washington. While at college, he met his former wife, Sharon. For a span of about 4 years, he was on the road working as an ironworker, building microwave towers from New England to California. He and Sharon moved to Barstow in 1963 and in 1965 his pride and joy, Stan, was born. Over the next 30 years, Ed worked at the NASA/ Jet Propulsion Laboratory Goldstone Tracking Station. He was involved with the construction of the many and varied antennas in the array that is used to track satellites.
Ed spend many weekends when Stan was growing up, riding motorcycles, camping, eating breakfast at “Husky’s”, and spending time together.
While in Barstow, he became very active in the community and remained so until his passing. He enjoyed coaching youth football and baseball. He kept busy helping with the Masonic youth organizations and was pleased to serve on the advisory board for the local Boys and Girls Club. He also has served on the Cemetery Board and assisted with the BNSF Christmas Train for Children for many years.
Ed became active in several civic and fraternal organizations. He was a member of the Lions Club, Moose Lodge, Elks and Chamber of Commerce. He was still an active member of the Lion’s with his work on getting eyeglasses to those in need and manning a route for displaying the flag on all major holidays in front of local businesses and residences.
He became a Blue Lodge Mason, a Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner many years ago. He held many different offices and titles and was the recipient of many honors and awards. In his own words, “I view my association with the Masonic fraternity and the Shrine as one of the finest and most fortunate experiences of my life. It has been very rewarding and fulfilling.”
In 2007, Ed was selected by the Barstow Chamber of Commerce as their Man of the Year.
Ed spent his leisure time trap shooting, bowling, fishing and hunting. He was able to share his love of trap shooting with his grandsons and went on yearly hunting trips with his hunting buddies.
Ed and Stan not only were father and son, but best friends. So much so, that Stan asked his father to be his best man when he married his wife, Trista in 1995. Ed lived directly behind his son and they were able to enjoy daily visits with each other all these years. Ed was blessed with four grandchildren, Molly, Dalton, Ali and Wyatt. He loved being with his grandchildren and attending their activities.
Ed spent time traveling to see family in Idaho, Washington and Montana in his retirement years. He also spent time with numerous friends, Tommie, Lawrence, Jimmy, Harry, Jim, his breakfast buddies, his Bartow Tire and Brake coffee pals, his lunch bunch and his precious dog “Sophie”.
Preceded in death by his mother, Nadyn Harvey, Father, Edward Hignett and sister, Shirley Light. Survived by his only son, Edward “Stan” Hignett and wife, Trista Hignett, four grandchildren, Margaret “Molly” Hignett, Dalton Hignett, Anastasia “Ali” Hignett, and Wyatt Hignett.
