Katherine Joyce Tompkins

Katherine Joyce Tompkins, lovingly known as Kathy, Kate, Kat, or “Kit Kat” by friends and coworkers, passed away peacefully at home in Newberry Springs, California, on April 10, 2025, at the age of 73.

Katherine was born on February 27, 1952, in San Bernardino, California, and grew up in Barstow. Throughout her life, she remained dedicated to serving her community. Her work with Barstow Community Hospital, Desert Ambulance Company, Fort Irwin Fire Department, and the Newberry Springs Fire Department left a lasting impact on the people around her. She was admired for her compassion, strength, and sharp sense of humor.

Among her many passions, Katherine had a deep love for horses. She spent years riding, training, and attending horse shows—something that brought her peace and happiness. She also loved country western line dancing and never missed a chance to kick up her boots and move to the music. Her connection to animals and her joy in dancing reflected the spirited, joyful person she was.

Katherine is survived by her loving husband, Danny; her children, Brandon and Teara; her brother, James; and her grandchildren, Justin, Nathan, Emily, and Kelsee. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

A celebration of her life will be planned and shared with family and friends at a later date.
