Jessie Stevenson, who the family affectionately called “Peaches”, was born in Lake Village, Arkansas, to her parents Sid and Bessie Harris on August 30, 1943. She passed away peacefully at home on June 29, 2015. Sid Harris moved his family, for a better life from Arkansas to Daggett, California when Jessie was in the third grade and she began to attend Daggett Elementary along with her younger siblings. The family began attending Union Missionary Baptist Church in Barstow, where Jessie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, and faithfully served as a member for sixty three (63) years. She loved to study the Word and was a strong Prayer Warrior. As an adult she found her ministry calling while serving as a member on the Kitchen Committee. This ministry suited her because she loved to cook and bake. She was an avid reader and enjoyed a variety of styles of books. Jessie began her career at the age of twenty one at the Marine Corps Logistics Base. Jessie was a hard worker, which resulted in her receiving several promotions. She eventually retired after over fifty years of dedicated service as a GS12. After retirement Jessie became bored and decided to volunteer for Desert Manna the local homeless shelter. She was the proud mother of two daughters Valerie and Lisa, whom she raised on her own. Her life was dedicated to nurturing, strengthening and instructing each of them daily, never ceasing to share her wisdom and honest incite. She was a direct no nonsense person, but loving, generous and kind. She had a great sense of humor. The joy of her life came when her only grandson Evan was born. She was no longer bored, and she and Lester took great pleasure in raising him from birth until he was eleven. Evan's special name for her was “Ma-Mo”. Their special bond was evident to all who watched them interact. Jessie attended every concert, school play, fund raising activity and awards celebrations with such pride. She loved Evan and never missed an opportunity to express that love openly. Jessie and Lester were married on January 8, 1989. She was a dedicated wife to her husband and she insured every aspect of his life was attended to and that he lacked for nothing. Jessie Stevenson is survived by her husband Lester Stevenson, her mother Bessie Harris, her aunt, Kate Gaston, daughters Valerie and Lisa Hatcher, grandson Evan Williams, brothers Walter and Melvin Harris, her adopted son Cedric Stark, step children Lester Stevenson, Jr., Douglas Stevenson, Carolyn Hagan, Wanda Peel, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Peaches will be missed and has left and gaping hole in the hearts of those she touched. We await our sweet reunion in heaven.
