Gwendolyn Eileen Pope was born on February 7, 1941 to Earle and Volet Baxter. Known to most as Gwen and to some friends as "Gwenbird", passed away peacefully after succumbing to a recent diagnoses of metastatic cancer, at the age of 84, on March 14th, 2025 at 4:08pm. She is leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication. A lifelong resident of Barstow, California, Gwen was a cherished member of the community and loving wife of Roland Eugene Pope, who preceded her in death.
She dedicated many years of service as a teletype operator at Goldstone, where she took great pride in her work and the friendships she built along the way. Known for her kind heart, unwavering strength, and warm spirit, Gwen touched the lives of all who knew her. Many friends and family will always remember the time spent at Foglesong Park watching her sons, Wayne Roy Tennell and Jim Tennell, play baseball with pride. She enjoyed very much being a Grandma and even more a Great-grandmother to the children of Jarrod and Jaymee Tennell (Micah and Jordan Tennell), Michael and Kristy Buckner's children (James, Hudson, Isabelle and Avery Buckner) and Andrew Allen (Leif Hunter Allen).
Gwen immensely enjoyed her last birthday together with her daughter from Colorado Springs and her son Jim at their lifelong friend's home, Mike and Lynn Shippley. She enjoyed all in attendence, adults, children and especially the many furry animals at the party. She had a cupcake with candles and enjoyed blowing out the candles and eating the chocolate delicacy. Gwen always loved gathering with friends at social events, especially at Shear Madness Salon.
She is survived by her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Peterson and John J. Peterson III. Her sons, Wayne Tennell and Basil Tennell. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She always remained faithfully by her older brother's side, Basil Baxter (March 24, 2025), may they both rest in eternal peace.
An informal celebration of life will be hosted on a stop by basis at the family residence April 15 from 12 to 5 PM. It is a simple gathering of remembrance where family and friends can take a moment to share a cherished memory. Stop by anytime from 12 to 5 PM at Gwen‘s home residence, April 15th.
