Mrs. “Elvie” Smith age 73 of Girdler, KY went to her heavenly home on Monday, March 11, 2013. She was the daughter of Anderson & Prudie (Mills) Smith born to them on March 15, 1939 in Knox Co. On July 1, 1957, she united in marriage with Will Smith and to this union three children were born. Elva enjoyed going to church, gardening and her family life. She was a dedicated Christian and an inspiration to many. She was a long time member of the Horn Branch Baptist church. Elva had a special gift with children.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Anderson and Prudie Smith, one son Darrell Gene Smith, one son in law, Wendell Abner, two brothers, Cecil and Leonard Smith, Two sisters, Elsie Smith and Ethel Chadwell, her father and mother in law, Boone and Mary Smith, brothers in law, Daniel Curt and Jabe Smith, Tom Jordan, Willie Branstutter, Clofis Bright, sisters in law, Bertha, Becky, Margaret and Laura Smith.
Survivors include her beloved husband of fifty five years, Will Smith of Girdler, two daughters Mary Betty Abner of Girdler and Elva June Saylor and husband Eddie also of Girdler, three grandchildren, Vanessa Dawn Shelton and husband Charlie of Ashland, KY, Jeremy Wyndell Abner and wife Khristie of Milton, KY and Jared Michael Saylor of Girdler, KY, three great grandchildren, Jeremy’s twins, David Zacharia and Hannah Jakiah Abner and Vanessa's little baby girl, Scarlet Grace Shelton, one brother Gilbert Smith and wife Linda of Barbourville, five sisters, Lillie Mae Bright of Napersville, Illinois, Susan Gregory and husband Pete of Barbourville, Wilma Smith and husband Wayne of Girdler, Floretta Smith of Woolum and Lovella Hampton and husband Donny also of Woolum, brothers in law, Jerry Chadwell of Girdler, J.L. Smith and wife Maryetta and Walter and Kathy Smith all of Woolum, KY and Edward Smith of Girdler, KY, four sisters in law, Lula Smith and husband Bert of Gray, KY, Marie Jordan of Cannon, Edna Branstutter of Barbourville and Lou Ellen “Dot” Townsley and husband Rev. Clarence Ray of Girdler. Elva also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elva Smith will be conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Jeremy Abner, Rev. Lonnie Collett and Rev. Ricky Broughton officiating. Pallbearers will be, Jeremy Abner, Jared Saylor, Sean Hampton, F.C. Smith, Greg Alsip, Gary Smith, Brad Miller, Justin Miller, Patrick Ledington and Charlie Shelton. Honorary pallbearers will be, Hospice of the Bluegrass staff, Dr. Maria Atienza and staff, all the boys and girls she took care of over the years, all members of the Horn Branch Baptist church and all of our wonderful family members who helped with her care. Elva will be laid to rest in the Anderson-Smith Cemetery at Woolum, KY. Hampton Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
Friends will be received at the Hampton Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. and on Wednesday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at 1:00 p.m.
