Dear family and friends, it is with indescribable sadness and grief that we regret to inform you that our son, Ryan, ended his life long struggle with mental illness on Tuesday, October 4th, 2022 in Baltimore, MD. Ryan was a gentle soul, tender hearted, extremely headstrong, a gifted runner, and athlete in general, and brilliant…not just our words….many others’ words.
Ryan was born in Corpus Christi, TX on September 22, 1986. There were complications at his birth but he grew physically to be what every parent would wish for…beautiful blue eyes, athletic, and an amazing ability to think fast. He went to The Woodlands High School where he ran cross country and track and field, his team winning the 2004 Texas State Championship in Cross Country and he individually reaching the 800 meter Texas State finals in 2005. Ryan attended the University of Texas, but typical of Ryan taking his own path, he left school in his junior year to begin his career in web development.
For those of you, and there are many friends and family, that helped and loved Ryan we want to thank you from the bottom of our heart….particularly his brother Adam, sister-in-law Twiggy and niece Arielle; Grandma Rose; cousins Liz, Susan, Chris and nephew Judah who spent many happy days with Ryan in Baltimore; Uncle Bill and Aunt Elena; Uncle Bob and Aunt Kathy; neighbor and employer, Theresia Smith, Pastor Randy Reeves, and therapist Paul Looney.
In memory of Ryan’s life we offer this prayer…
Dear God, You created Ryan and endowed him with many gifts and challenges. He embraced those challenges to the best of his ability. We know that his soul is with you and with those who loved him and have gone before him. We also know that his challenges have finally been overcome and that he is happy and at peace. Amen.
And for all family and friends who knew Ryan, loved him, and so very much tried to help him we offer these words of wisdom and comfort…
“Help is giving part of yourself to somebody who comes to accept it willingly and needs it badly. So it is that we can seldom help anybody. Either we don’t know what part to give or maybe we don’t like to give any part of ourselves. Then, more often than not, the part that is needed is not wanted. And even more often, we do not have the part that is needed. But we can still love him, we can love completely without complete understanding.” - Norman Mclean
We thank you all for trying to help and loving our son, Ryan.
Upon his death, we were approached by the Lieber Institute for Brain Development, located at the Science and Technology Park of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, for permission to include Ryan in their work. Please consider donating to this cause so that Ryan’s life may help someone overcome similar issues in the future. Thank you.
