Rudy Barrera Sr. passed away on Friday, February 24, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Rudy was a man of his word, and had a true compassion for others, especially for his sons, grandkids, and his beloved wife Armida. He was a man that many people admired for his strong family values and was there for anyone who was in need of help.Rudy was born in Bakersfield, Ca on January 5, 1938, to Emilio and Modesta (Tita) Barrera. He was the middle of two siblings; older sister Obdulia (Julie) Soria and younger sister Sylvia Ortiz. Rudy excelled in academics at East Bakersfield High School. Upon graduating, he was offered a scholarship and the opportunity to work for a local businessman, Harold Moore. He used the scholarship money to earn an AA in accounting from Bakersfield College. In 1958, Harold Moore opened Kern Turf Supply and appointed dad-manager. He later became a partner for 49 years until he retired in 2005.In addition to his business success, he was an active member of the Kiwanis for 25 years. He served as President and held numerous other positions. He was a devout Catholic and served as a Eucharist Minister and youth instructor.Rudy married the love of his life, Armida on September 6, 1958. They cherished their life together for 58 years and raised three sons. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Family was everything to him. He is survived by his wife Armida; sons Rudy Jr. and wife Deana, Randy and wife Vancie, and youngest son Derek. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, his younger sister Sylvia Ortiz, and numerous nieces and nephews.The viewing will be held on Sunday March 5, 2017, at Hillcrest Chapel from 4-8pm with a Rosary at 6 pm. Mass will be at San Clemente Mission on Monday, March 6, 2017, at 9:30 am and graveside will immediately follow at Hillcrest Mortuary.
