February 17, 1932 - September 2, 2018
Roy David Mason, 86, was born February 17, 1932, and passed peacefully on September 2, 2018, in San Luis Obispo after a brief illness. Roy was born in Weatherford, OK and moved to CA in 1936. He grew up working and sleeping in cotton fields. He joined the US Army in 1946, served in Germany, and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. He married Diane Alise Ashton in 1953 and they raised their three children together. Roy began his career as a firefighter in McFarland in 1958 and retired as a Captain in Bakersfield in 1987. Roy will be remembered as a hard worker, a real "John-Wayne-pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps" kind of a guy. Roy valued education and considered it a life-long endeavor. He had a smooth singing voice, was light-of-foot, had a love for fishing and he made a great Santa Claus.
He was superb story-teller, stubborn, ornery, and a loving man. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dovie and Vernon Mason, wife Diane, and grandson Joshua Williams. He is survived by his sisters, Grace and Joyce, his children, Diana (Gavin), David, and Debbie (Ernie), his grandchildren, Jarrett (Melissa), Brett (Kristen), Eric, Jenae (John), Brad, Tiffany (Chris), Philip (Sarah), Holly (Luke) and great-grandchildren, Chase, Kaia, Gracey, Titus, Joshua, Ember, Hudson, Morgan, Harper, McKenzie, Addison, Cooper, Ashley, and Elijah as well as other family and friends. He was loved and he will be missed. His funeral service will be held Friday, September 14th at 10:30 am at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield, CA.
